Who is Doina Botez?
I was born in Bucharest in 1951, I graduated in Fine Arts in 1975, with the “Ion Andreescu” merit grant won in 1974, at the “Nicolae Grigorescu” University Institute in Bucharest. I dedicate myself to the illustration of the books, especially for children, in addition to painting and graphics, and I also become a set designer of the Romanian film house of cartoons Animafilm. Since 1974, I participate in collective exhibitions organized by the Ordine degli Artisti of Romania. In 1984, I was awarded a scholarship, in Italy, in the field of the Italian-Romanian cultural agreement. I can also express, in my work, some tragic aspects of the dictatorship, up to the admonitions for the illustrations of the verses by the dissident poet Ana Blandiana. Subsequently, the communist authorities forbid me any professional activity in the field of book illustration. This is the decisive moment that determines my decision to leave the home country. In November of ’89, just one month before the fall of the communist regime, I leave for Italy. Since 1989 I live and work in Rome, dedicating myself exclusively to painting and graphic activities; in 2004, I became an Italian citizen.
