IL CASTELLO DI SPALTENNA – La perla del Chianti

Tuscany is considered one of the most fascinating destinations on our Peninsula. We could say that this region of central Italy is certainly among the most beautiful and appreciated destinations in the world, both for its artistic and natural wonders. Consider only its capital Florence – the cradle of the Renaissance and a treasure chest of some of the most important artistic works in the world such as the David di Donatello or the Opere of Botticelli, kept at the famous Uffizi Gallery. Consider also cities of unparalleled charm such as Lucca, Arezzo or Siena; or to scenarios of natural beauty such as the Chianti Hills, famous above all for the production of one of the most prestigious red berried wines in the world: Chianti DOCG.
And it is right along the soft Chianti hills and among its romantic vineyards that it is possible to discover the Spaltenna Castle, an enchanting 5-star relais of Greve in Chianti, built within an ancient fortified monastery, consisting of the Pieve and the its bell tower. A place where time seems to have stopped, also thanks to the obsessive attention of the restoration interventions and to every single element or piece of furniture inserted in the rooms of the resort, or in the thirty-seven rooms inside it: cozy rooms and suites with elegant country-chic style, in which original nineteenth-century furnishings and accessories set up the rooms in a never repetitive way, strongly emphasizing the style and belonging to the Tuscan territory.
Elements kept intact over time, such as wooden doors, the splendid terracotta floors or rustic beamed ceilings, give the rooms a priceless welcome, enhanced in DeLuxe Rooms by a Jacuzzi or a hydromassage shower. For a special occasion and an unforgettable stay, the Jacuzzi Garden Suite is recommended, 60 square meters of elegance and refinement, with a large living room, a bedroom with four-poster bed, two bathrooms (one with a shower and the other with a Jacuzzi) and a small garden private with outdoor Jacuzzi for two people.
The rooms with a breathtaking view of the valley are priceless, but also unforgettable are those overlooking the cloister, dominated by the ancient bell tower of the Pieve.
And it is precisely here that the Pievano takes shape (and name), a gourmet restaurant awarded the Michelin Star in 2017, whose guide sees the young Stelios Sakalis, a chef of Greek origins and with a “stellar” curriculum that includes important international experiences, including those alongside Gordon Ramsey in some of his most important European starred restaurants.
A cuisine – that of Sakalis – straddling Tuscan tradition and Mediterranean culture, capable of expressing itself in dishes of strong identity and elegance. In addition there are the other two restaurants inside the structure, namely the Osteria and La Terrazza, where you can taste a more typical cuisine and excellent pizzas.
Obviously, hospitality cannot be complete without the wellness area: two swimming pools are available to guests – the outdoor one with a waterfall and an indoor one. Do not miss the Pieve SPA, over 300 square meters of wellness in which to enjoy the warmth of the Finnish Sauna, the aromas of the Turkish Bath, the vapors of the Tepidarium, the fragrances of the Emotional Showers and the feeling of relaxation, typical of the hydromassage pool.
Near the structure there are about two hundred olive trees destined for the production of the extra virgin olive oil of the Castello di Spaltenna and four hectares of vineyard where the San Giovese grape is grown, necessary for the production of the Chianti del Pievano; both products are intended for in-house restaurants or guests of the hotel, who can buy them in the small Bottega, where the ceramics of the artist Nicoletta Penco are produced.
