Presentato in Concorso alla 42° edizione del Festival del Cinema di Torino, Under the grey sky è il nuovo film di Mara Tamkovich
Mara Tamkovich è una regista e sceneggiatrice polacco-bielorussa. Ha studiato giornalismo all’Università di Varsavia e regia cinematografica alla Warsaw Film School e alla Wajda School. Per quasi dieci anni ha lavorato come giornalista per una Tv e radio bielorussa indipendente, trasmettendo dall’estero per fornire informazioni non censurate ai bielorussi. Come filmmaker, si concentra su temi socialmente rilevanti e profondamente legati alla realtà. I suoi cortometraggi sono stati proiettati e premiati in numerosi festival in Polonia e all’estero. Under the Grey Sky è il suo lungometraggio d’esordio. È inoltre parte dell’Associazione dei registi polacchi e dell’Accademia del cinema indipendente bielorusso.
Abbiamo raccolto alcune domande
GSS: raccontaci del film «Under the Grey Sky
Mara Tamkovich: è un tentativo di riflettere su come la protesta del 2020 in Bielorussia abbia spostato il paradigma dalla stagnazione autoritaria al terrore aperto e di esaminare le modalità per sopravvivere a questa situazione. Abbiamo assistito a una straordinaria e stimolante esplosione di determinazione e audacia segnata dalla forte convinzione che il cambiamento in Bielorussia sia possibile; un momento che alcuni definiscono come la vera nascita della nazione bielorussa».
“Under the Grey Sky is an attempt to reflect on the way the protest of 2020 in Belarus has shifted the paradigm from authoritarian stagnation to full on terror and to look into ways to survive it. We had this amazing, uplifting rise of determination and fearlessness, an empowering moment of true belief that change in Belarus is possible; the moment some say the Belarusian nation was actually born.”
GSS: Pensi che attraverso il cinema e le forme d’arte si riesca a rieducare anche coloro che non si espongono per il bene della collettività come la protagonista ?
GSS: Do you think that trough cinema and any form of art it will be possibile to re educate even those that are not spending their life for the good of society against abusing government? Such as the protagonist did of her life in your movie?
Mara Tamkovich: Penso che il potere del cinema sia quello di portarci in luoghi non conosciuti, offrendoci delle prospettive sconosciute. Concedendoci di fare esperienza di dilemmi e scelte vissute da altre persone. Soprendentemente comunicano molto anche a noi, anche se i background, le culture, gli studi hanno provenienze diverse. Non penso che il cinema sia uno strumento politico. Non credo nemmeno che sia il suo vero scopo, ma di sicuro il cinema può ispirare molto e far scaturire pensieri profondi.
I think the power of cinema is taking us to the unknown places. It offers unknown perspectives. And is allowing us to experience the dilemmas of other that surprisingly can resonate with us, even if we ourselves have a very different backgrounds. I do not find it to be a political tool, it is also not the purpose. But I do believe the cinema can inspire and provoke thought.
GSS: Hai dei nuovi progetti? Se si sono ancora di matrice sociale, di denuncia politica in una forma realistica simile al documentario come Under the Grey Sky? Oppure vorrai rivolgerti a nuove forme espressive e idee diverse?
GSS: Do you have new projects? And if yes always of social, political complaint and in a documentary narrative form? Or brand new ideas and project
Mara Tamkovich: Il mio nuovo progetto è ancora connesso a alla Bielorussia e ad eventi reali. Sento che ci sono talmente tante storie commoventi da raccontare che ne verrebbero fuori moltissimi film. Anche nel nuovo progetto sarò vicina ad una narrazione e uno stile realistico. Aggiungerò alcuni elementi di thriller politico, dato che la fonte reale fornisce questo spunto. Questo è quanto posso dire finora dato che il progetto è in una fase embrionale.
My new project is also connected to Belarus and the real events. I feel like we have so many moving stories to tale it will be worth of many, many films. The new film will stay close to a realistic style as well. But will have some more elements of political thriller as the real inspiration naturally provides this option. That all I can say right now as the project is in the early development phase.
GSS: lasci il finale del film non concluso del tutto, come la storia stessa che segue il presente. Hai fiducia in quello che avverrà o il cielo Rimarrà per sempre Grigio dati gli scenari geopolitici odierni non solo nel tuo paese?
GSS: Since you follow the present, you Leave with no certain end the movie. How do you think it will finish the story? Do you have Hope or The Sky will remain always and ONLY GREY, due to the social, political scenarios in the whole world?
Mara Tamkovich: sebbene UNDER THE GREY SKY sia una storia forte e devastante, per me è piena di speranza. La speranza è quella che giace nelle persone che ritraggo e in quel pezzo di umanità che ci fa resistere alle ingiustizie. In un’epoca in cui il male sembra così potente e la dignità ha perso territorio verso il cinismo, trovo grande speranza nelle persone che non soccombono alle loro oppressioni
Although UNDER THE GREY SKY is a heartbreaking story, for me it is about hope as well. The hope is in those people I am portraying and in this piece of our humanity that makes us resist the injustice. In the times when the evil seems so powerful and dignity has lost to cynicism, I find hope in the people who do not succumb to the oppression.
